Karla Harshaw Undergoes Brain Surgery

Operation to Remove Editor’s Tumor Successful

Karla Garrett Harshaw, the editor of Ohio’s Springfield News-Sun and immediate past president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, underwent surgery Monday for the removal of a recently diagnosed brain tumor, the newspaper disclosed tonight.

“The surgery was successful, and she is progressing as expected. She is recuperating from her surgery at a Dayton hospital,” according to a story scheduled for Wednesday’s newspaper.

“As a result, she will be out of the office on leave for an undetermined amount of time. At this time, Harshaw is unable to receive phone calls and visitors are limited to family only. The family requests that any cards be sent c/o Springfield News-Sun, 202 N. Limestone St., Springfield, 45503.”

Harshaw, who is also senior editor for Cox Community Newspapers, was the first woman of color to lead the organization of the nation’s daily newspaper editors when elected ASNE president in 2004. She was then 49. Harshaw is also a founder of the Dayton Association of Black Journalists and a board member of the Maynard Institute.

According to the National Brain Tumor Foundation, “one factor that distinguishes brain tumors from other tumors is that they arise in the skull, an organ encased by bone, and there is very little room for expansion with the skull. They are also among the few types of tumors that generally do not tend to metastasize or spread to other parts of the body.”

The publication Law & Health Weekly reported last week that, “Each year over 40,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a primary brain tumor and 360,000 Americans are currently living with a brain tumor. There are over 120 different types of brain tumors. Despite numerous studies about brain tumors, their causes remain unknown.”

The Springfield paper also said that a guest book for well-wishers could be found at www.springfieldnewssun.com.

Harshaw, a Wright State University graduate, became editor of the News-Sun in 1990. Prior to that, she was with the Dayton Daily News as a reporter, assistant city editor, features editor and assistant business manager. Her other professional affiliations include membership in the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Minority Media Executives and the Ohio Newspaper Women’s Association, according to her biography.

Her paper reported last year that “she and husband Timothy Harshaw have three children, Jason Milton, 23; Vincent Harshaw, 14; and Alexander Harshaw, 12.”
