Journal-isms Roundtable Sunday on Facebook: ‘Women’s Voices on Justice for Black Men’

Hello, all,

Our next Journal-isms Roundtable via Zoom takes place next Sunday, June 2, at 1 p.m. Eastern with contributors to Angela P. Dodson’s new book, “We Refuse to Be Silent: Women’s Voices for Justice for Black Men.” It will be simulcast on Facebook at < https://www.facebook.com/RPjournalisms/ >

Given the holiday weekend, we have not heard from many of our regulars. There is still time to RSVP. Feel free to alert others interested in the topic. They can email me at princeeditor (at) gmail.com if they’d like to be on the Zoom.

Here is more on the book

This is Angela’s bio. Angela is a Roundtable regular who, with her husband, Michael Days, spoke with us in 2017 at the University of Maryland when her previous book, “Remember the Ladies: Celebrating Those Who Fought for Freedom at the Ballot Box,” was published. (Photo by Sharon Farmer)

Angela has enlisted these contributors to join her on June 2:

  • Mary C. Curtis
  • Jackie Jones
  • Yanick Rice Lamb
  • Sonya Ross
  • Anita Samuels
  • Gayle Pollard Terry
  • Geri Coleman Tucker
  • Sandra Long Weaver (list updated May 24)

Recalling the tragic and outrageous police killings of Black men, Angela tells readers:

“As writers, we grapple with the implications of thse modern-day lynchings for Black men and the impact for us as women. We also explore viable solutions.

“We talk about how we feel about it — watching the everydayness of it, the psychological trauma and wounds inflicted on the men who are our sons, brothers, husbands, cousins, uncles, co-workers, students, clients and so on.

“We cannot remain silent, we must speak for them, for those who cannot, and even for those who can, to show our support and our love. We must answer when the call for us. . . .

“We hope this anthology will serve as a catalyst for a national conversation about the killing of African Americans, police brutality, reforms in policing, and systemic racism in the judicial system and in society at large.”

Asked for my own comment on the book, I said, “Angela Dodson and the knowledgeable writers she has gathered eloquently document the pain that Black women have endured as they weather the centuries of demonization and targeting of Black men. Would that more Black men understand and appreciate that love, and that citizens as well as policy makers be moved to act.”

Will be recorded for posting on YouTube.

Congratulations to Dan Lothian!

Boston public media producer GBH has named Dan Lothian to the newly created role of Editor in Chief, GBH News and The World. An award-winning journalist with deep roots in both domestic and international news, Lothian is currently the executive producer of The World, public radio’s longest-running daily global news program, produced in Boston by GBH and PRX, a leading public radio and podcast distributor,” GBH, officially WGBH, announced today.

“ ‘Dan has impeccable credentials and is respected by colleagues throughout GBH and by journalists across the globe,’ said Susan Goldberg, president and CEO of GBH. ‘With his background in both breaking news and long-form features, and with deep experience in radio, television, and across digital platforms, he is ideally suited to lead coverage for today’s audiences’. . . . “

Dan has been with us twice. At first in November 2013, after he left CNN (pictured, by Danita Delaney), where he was White House correspondent, saying he resigned because “after almost five years commuting from DC to Boston every week I needed a break.” He had previously been CNN Boston bureau chief.

Dan rejoined us in April 2022 (top photo), as executive producer of “The World,” for our session on the need for diversity among foreign correspondents.

Today’s announcement was made just days after GBH announced layoffs of 31 staff members.

Say Brother 1988 ‘Youth on Youth Forum’

Elliott Francis Recalls ‘Say Brother’

You might have heard that GBH in Boston, as part of its cutbacks, has suspended “Basic Black,” formerly “Say Brother.”

(“Boston’s Long-Running ‘Basic Black’ Suspended” < https://tinyurl.com/jfcvzhcw >, 6th item)

This from Elliott Francis, Roundtable regular who is producer/host of ‘NOW’, Facebook Live:

Just wanted to let you know (…in case you didn’t)  that I was host of WGBH’s ‘Say Brother ‘back in the mid to late 80’s for about 6-years. This was my last Boston gig before I left for Chicago to host Johnson Publishing Co’s ‘Ebony Jet Showcase’ in the 90’s

As you might imagine, I’ve been chatting with former colleagues from that era and prior who are terribly disappointed that the show’s current version became one of the targets of this recent budget slash by WGBH, ending a legacy in black TV programming that dates back to 1968.

Here’s a couple of clips from YouTube to verify my claim. First, is a show we did in my next to last season with guest host Rebecca Walker (…daughter of author Alice Walker)…(above) 2nd was aired a year later during a school committee crisis in Boston.

And:

This is the live town hall we (‘Say Brother’) produced in the middle of the Charles Stuart murder investigation (Oct.1989-Jan.1990) recently re-examined in the Boston Globe multi-part series, “Nightmare in Mission Hill; The Untold Story of the Charles Stuart Shooting“.

It’s one of the best examples of the work we used to do on behalf of the people of Dorchester/Roxbury and greater Boston.

Side note…the first reporter taking questions, the late Lovell Dyett (pictured) generally regarded as the dean of black reporters in Boston, was one of two, maybe three reporters in the city who NEVER believed Stuart’s alibi. For nearly two months, almost everyone in the city, including folks in the black community, bought the story.
