Save the Date: Journal-isms Roundtable Goes to Chicago During NABJ!
The Journal-isms Roundtable will hold a panel, “Press Freedom in Black-Run Countries,” in Chicago while the National Association of Black Journalists convention takes place in that city this summer.
The Roundtable will not officially be part of the convention, instead will be hosted at the offices of Chicago Public Media on Thursday, Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Central time; 10 a.m. to noon Eastern. Chicago Public Media offices are on Navy Pier, at 848 East Grand Ave., Chicago, Ill., 60611.
A Journal-isms team, Chicago Public Media and the NABJ Global Journalism Task Force agreed this week that the event will be co-hosted by Chicago Public Media, which includes WBEZ and the Chicago Sun-Times, the Task Force and Journal-isms. Those who are not in Chicago may join by Zoom. All are invited. Registration for our Roundtable may be required.
After Black French journalist Olivier Dubois was held hostage last year for 711 days in Mali, West Africa, the press-freedom group Reporters Without Borders said, “To be a journalist in the Sahel means enduring the growing presence of radical armed groups who do not hesitate to kill reporters or kidnap them and use them as bargaining chips,” and more.
More recently, authoritarianism has been rising around the world, including in the United States as well as in Africa. That most often means finding a way to tamp down, even silence, the press. Haiti’s existential crisis has been extensively reported, less so the state of journalism there and in the rest of the Caribbean.
Discussions about the African diaspora most often do not include press freedom, and journalism sessions in the U.S. about Black people often do not include a global view.

Rashida Jones Extols the Power of Journalism
“MSNBC President Rashida Jones spoke about the power of journalism and encouraged graduating students at the University of the District of Columbia to [be] ‘engaged and active’ as ‘the 2024 election looms ahead’ in a moving commencement address on Saturday,” Jennifer Bowers Bahney reported Monday for Mediaite.
“Jones, a graduate of Hampton University, gave the weekend commencement address at UDC, the historically Black college known and only public university in the capital.
“ ‘I know a number of you are first-generation graduates. You are setting the example in your own families and communities. That pressure, the pressure of being a first or only, is a privilege. There is a certain responsibility when you are the first to do something. I have personally seen it and felt it. But that pressure means you are doing something extraordinary,’ Jones said.
“She continued by extolling the power of journalism . . . “

Media and the Law: What journalists need to know about copyright & defamation suits
Media lawyers report a significant uptick in defamation lawsuits brought against journalists by plaintiffs who don’t want to be called on their false narratives or want to punish reporters for their work. Some of these lawsuits are getting farther in the court system than they used to, costing journalists and news organizations precious time and money.
Copyright violations are a risk for media professionals, too. In an era of artificial intelligence and social media, journalists need to be aware of copyright and fair use law when working with digital content, especially when it is easy to cut, paste, and distribute content online.
